  PROJECT 297

Natural Law and the 2nd Amendment

And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”  So they said, “Nothing.”  Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.—Luke 22:35-36

Jesus understood that this world could be a dangerous place, and that His disciples would need a proper weapon in order to defend themselves. Self-defense is a natural right given by God and is just as much a right today as it was during the time Jesus was talking to His disciples. If we all have the basic God given right to Life, as stated in the Declaration of Independence, the right to bear arms should not be infringed upon. Rich Lowry, editor of the National Review, further elaborates on the God given rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness that are stated in the Declaration.

“The Bill of Rights puts flesh on the bones of those “unalienable rights” of life and liberty, and numbers “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms” among them.  Why? Because the founders believed, rightly, that everyone has an inherent right to self-defense.”[1]

Even with all that being said, the Second Amendment and American’s right to defend themselves are under growing attack. For example, H.R.5717, the Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety Act, by Rep. Henry C. Johnson Jr. (D-GA), is an attempt to infringe upon American’s Second Amendment rights.  Introduced on January 20, 2020, this bill would raise the minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 years to 21 years, creates a nationwide gun registry, implements a national “red flag” confiscation policy, and imposes a 30% tax on firearms and a 50% tax on ammunition.  Luckily, if this bill gets by the House, and somehow manages to squeak by the Senate, it will end up on President Trump’s desk where he will likely veto it. The same cannot be said under a Biden administration. You can bet that the Democrats would try and pass similar legislation if Biden is elected.
